Xepi is a prescription medication used to treat impetigo, a bacterial skin infection.

Xepi belongs to a group of drugs called fluoroquinolone antibiotics. These work by killing the bacteria.

This medication comes in topical form and is applied 2 times a day.

Side effects may include red skin and scaly patches.

Uses of Xepi

Xepi is a prescription medication approved for the topical treatment of impetigo due to Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes in adult and pediatric patients 2 months of age and older.

This medication may be prescribed for other uses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Side Effects of Xepi

Side effects of Xepi that have been reported include:

  • rosacea, a skin condition redness and other skin symptoms typically on the face.
  • seborrheic dermatitis, a skin condition with scaly patches.

Xepi Interactions

No drug interactions have been determined by the manufacturer. However, you should tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Not all drug interactions are known or reported and new drug interactions are continually being reported.

Xepi Precautions

Serious side effects have been reported with Xepi including the following:

  • the potential for bacteria overgrowth. If Xepi is used for an extended period of time, bacteria that Xepi does not kill and fungi can overgrow.

Xepi Food Interactions

Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Xepi, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving this medication.

Before taking Xepi, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Especially tell your doctor if you:

  • are allergic to Xepi or to any of its ingredients
  • have any skin problems or conditions
  • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Xepi and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

There are no well-done studies that have been done in humans with Xepi. In animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication, and the babies did not show any medical issues related to this medication.

Since Xepi is only for topical use, the amount of Xepi absorbed into the system is negligible. When pregnant women use Xepi, It is not expected that fetal exposure will occur.

Xepi and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

It is not known if Xepi crosses into human milk. Because many medications can cross into human milk and because of the possibility for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants with use of this medication, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or stop the use of this medication. Your doctor and you will decide if the benefits outweigh the risk of using Xepi.

Since Xepi is only for topical use, the amount of Xepi absorbed into the system is negligible. When breastfeeding women use Xepi, It is not expected that baby exposure will occur.

Xepi Usage

Take Xepi exactly as prescribed.

Xepi comes in a topical form and is applied twice a day. It is typically used for 5 days.

  • Xepi is only for topical use. Do not swallow Xepi or use it in the eyes, on the mouth or lips, inside the nose, or inside the female genital area.
  • Use Xepi for the entire length of time that your healthcare provider recommends, even if symptoms have improved.
  • Let your healthcare provider know if symptoms have not improved within 3 days after starting Xepi.
  • Wash your hands after applying Xepi.
  • The area being treated may be covered with bandages.

Xepi Dosage

Apply a thin layer of Xepi topically to the affected area twice daily for 5 days.

Xepi Overdose

If you take too much Xepi, call your healthcare provider or local Poison Control Center, or seek emergency medical attention right away.

Other Requirements

  • Store Xepi at room temperature between 68ºF - 77ºF (20ºC - 25ºC).
  • Keep this and all medicines out of the reach of children.
