Colace is an over the counter medication used to treat constipation and help soften the stools. Colace belongs to a group of drugs called stool softeners. These work by helping the stools absorb water and fat, which makes the stools softer and easier to pass. 

Colace comes in a capsule form, and is usually taken twice a day, but can be taken 1-4 times a day with a full glass of water. 

Common side effects of Colace include diarrhea, and abdominal cramping.
