Kaopectate is an over the counter medication used to treat diarrhea, heartburn, upset stomach, indigestion, and nausea in adults and children 12 years and older. Kaopectate contains bismuth subsalicylate, a drug that belongs to a group of medications called antidiarrheals. These work by decreasing the flow of fluids and electrolytes into the bowel, reduces inflammation within the intestine, and may kill the organisms that can cause diarrhea.

This medication comes in a suspension and tablets and is taken with or without food, as needed.

Common side effects of Kaopectate include darkening of the stools and/or tongue.
