Metamucil is an over the counter medication used to treat constipation in adults and children 6 years and older.  Metamucil belongs to a group of drugs called bulk forming laxatives. These work by absorbing liquid in the intestines, swelling, and forming a bulky stool, which is easy to pass.

This medication comes in capsules and powder. The powder should be mixed with 8 ounces of water and taken 3 times a day. The capsules are taken 4 times daily with full glass of water.

Common side effects of Metamucil include abdominal fullness and bloating.
