Mucinex DM Overview

Updated:

Mucinex DM is an over the counter medication used to control cough and loosen chest congestion in adults and children 12 years of age and older.

It is a single product containing 2 ingredients: Guaifenesin and Dextromethorphan.

Guaifenesin belongs to a group of drugs called expectorants. These work by thinning the mucus in the air passages to make it easier to cough up the mucus and clear the airways.

Dextromethorphan belongs to a group of drugs called cough suppressants. These work by decreasing activity in the part of the brain that causes coughing.

This medication comes in tablet and is taken twice daily with plenty of water.

Common side effects of Mucinex DM include dizziness, lightheadedness, and nervousness.
