Bill and Sarah Altland opened Whale Tail Pharmacy in 2001. As the first and only community pharmacy on POW Island, the pharmacist, Julie McDonald, and staff are here to help you with your health care needs, over the counter products, and special orders. For all your prescription needs, over-the-counter, and health care products. We are pleased to serve all the communities on the island:  Coffman Cove, Craig, Hollis, Hydaburg, Kasaan, Klawock, Naukati, Point Baker, Port Protection, Thorne Bay and Whale Pass.

We were named "2001 Business of the Year" by the Prince of Wales Island Chamber of Commerce. In 2012, Bill was honored with the Distinguished Pharmacist Away from the Alaska Pharmacists Associatiom. Bill was appointed to the State of Alaska Board of Pharmacy by Governor Murkowski and confirmed by the legislature in 2003.Sarah received the Alaska Pharmacist Association's prestigious Bowl of Hygeia Award  in 2003 for her service to the community as well as her work at Whale Tail Pharmacy. Julie is currently serving on the Alaska Pharmacist Association Board as well as the Christian Pharmacist Fellowship International (CPFI) Board.  In June of 2012 Julie was honored with the Warren E. Weaver Service Award, the highest award given by the CPFI.
