Praziquantel is a prescription medication used to treat infections due to schistosoma, a type of worm that lives in the bloodstream, and liver fluke, a type of worm that lives in or near the liver. Praziquantel is in a class of medications called anthelmintics. It works by killing the worms that cause the infections.
This medication comes as a tablet to take by mouth and is usually taken three times a day for one day (spaced 4-6 hours apart). Swallow tablets with water during a meal. Do not chew praziquantel tablets.
Common side effects of praziquantel include general ill feeling, headache, stomach pain, nausea, and increased temperature. Praziquantel can also cause dizziness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how praziquantel affects you.
