Preparation H is an over the counter medication used to relieve both internal and external hemorrhoidal symptoms in adults and children 12 years of age and older.

It is a single product containing 3 ingredients: mineral oil, petrolatum, and phenylephrine.

Phenylephrine belongs to a group of drugs called vasoconstrictors. These work by temporarily shrinking swollen hemorrhoidal tissue. Mineral oil and petrolatum belong to a class of drugs called protectants. These work to protects the inflamed, irritated anorectal surface to help make bowel movements less painful.

This medication comes in an ointment and is applied externally to the affected area up to 4 times daily, especially at night, in the morning or after each bowel movement.

Common side effects of Preparation H include mild pain or stinging.
