Ilumya is a prescription medication used to treat moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults. 

Ilumya belongs to a group of drugs called interleukin-23 (IL-23) antagonists. These help to decrease inflammatory and immune responses associated with plaque psoriasis. 

This medication is available in an injectable form to be given directly under the skin (subcutaneously) by a healthcare professional.

Common side effects of Ilumya include upper respiratory tract infections, injection site reactions and diarrhea.

Side Effects of Ilumya

Serious side effects have been reported with Ilumya. See the “Ilumya Precautions” section.

Common side effects of Ilumya include the following:

  • upper respiratory infections
  • injection site reactions
  • diarrhea

Ilumya Interactions

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take:

  • Live attenuated vaccines, such as measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), rotavirus, smallpox, chickenpox, yellow fever and shingles.

Ilumya Precautions

Serious side effects have been reported with Ilumya including the following:

  • Serious hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions.
  • Infections. 
  • Risk of tuberculosis (TB) infection. 

Do not take Ilyuma if you are allergic to Ilumya or to any of its ingredients.

Ilumya Food Interactions

Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Ilumya, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving this medication.

Inform MD

Before taking Ilumya, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Especially tell your doctor if you:

  • are allergic to Ilumya or to any of its ingredients
  • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Ilumya and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

The FDA categorizes medications based on safety for use during pregnancy. Five categories - A, B, C, D, and X, are used to classify the possible risks to an unborn baby when a medication is taken during pregnancy.

Ilumya falls into category C. There are no well-controlled studies that have been done in pregnant women. Ilumya should be used during pregnancy only if the possible benefit outweighs the possible risk to the unborn baby.

Ilumya and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

It is not known if Ilumya crosses into human milk. Because many medications can cross into human milk and because of the possibility for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants with use of this medication, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or stop the use of this medication. Your doctor and you will decide if the benefits outweigh the risk of using Ilyuma. 

Ilumya Usage

Take Ilumya exactly as prescribed.

This medication is available in an injectable form to be given directly under the skin (subcutaneously) by a healthcare professional. Ilumya syringes are single-dose syringes that should only be used once. 

Ilumya is usually stored in the refrigerator. Prior to injection, your healthcare provider should remove Ilyuma from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. Your healthcare provider should inject Ilyuma in skin that is clear and easily accessible, such as the abdomen (stomach), thighs or upper arms. Ilyuma should not be administered within 2 inches of the belly button or where skin is tender or bruised. 

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses of Ilumya at the same time.

Ilumya Dosage

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.

The dose your doctor recommends may be based on the following:

  • the condition being treated
  • other medical conditions you have
  • other medications you are taking
  • how you respond to this medication

The recommended dose of Ilumya for the treatment of plaque psoriasis is 100 mg (1 mL) inserted under the skin (subcutaneously) by a healthcare professional at weeks 0, 4, and every 12 weeks thereafter. 

Ilumya Overdose

If Ilumya is administered by a healthcare provider in a medical setting, it is unlikely that an overdose will occur. However, if overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention.

Other Requirements

  • Store Ilumya in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F) in the original carton to protect from light until the time of use.
  • Do not freeze or shake Ilumya.
  • Ilumya can be kept at room temperature at 25°C (77°F) for up to 30 days in the original carton to protect from light. Once stored at room temperature, do not place back in the refrigerator. If not used within 30 days, discard Ilumya.
  • Do not store Ilumya above 25°C (77°F). 
  • Keep this and all medicines out of the reach of children.
