Supartz is an injection given in the knee to treat osteoarthritis (OA) in patients who have not found adequate response from physical therapy and pain relievers. 

It helps relieves arthritis of the knee by replacing the lubricating fluid inside the knee. 

Supartz is given as an injection into the knee joint at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic.

Common side effects of Supartz include injection site pain and joint and back pain.

Uses of Supartz

Supartz is a prescription medication used to treat osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee in patients who have not found adequate response from physical therapy and pain relievers. 

This medication may be prescribed for other uses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Side Effects of Supartz

Serious side effects have been reported with Supartz. See the “Supartz Precautions” section.

Common side effects of Supartz include the following:

  • joint pain
  • back pain
  • injection site reaction
  • headache

Supartz Interactions

No drug interactions have been studied by the manufacturer. However, you should tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Not all drug interactions are known or reported and new drug interactions are continually being reported.

Supartz Precautions

You should not receive Supartz injection if you:

  • are allergic to Supartz or to any of its ingredients
  • are allergic to products from birds, such as feathers, eggs, and poultry
  • have an infection or skin disease in the area in which the injection will be given

Supartz Food Interactions

Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Supartz, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving this medication.

Before receiving Supartz, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Especially tell your doctor if you:

  • are allergic to Supartz or to any of its ingredients
  • are allergic to products from birds, such as feathers, eggs, and poultry
  • have an infection or skin disease in the area in which the injection will be given
  • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed

Supartz and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

There have been no studies in pregnant women with Supartz. Therefore, this medication should only be used if the potential benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risks to the unborn child. You and your doctor will discuss these risks and benefits an determine if Supartz is right for you.

Supartz and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

It is not known if Supartz crosses into human milk. Because many medications can cross into human milk and because of the possibility for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants with use of this medication, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or stop the use of this medication. Your doctor and you will decide if the benefits outweigh the risk of using Supartz.

Supartz Usage

Supartz is available as an injection and is injected into the knee by a healthcare provider. 

It is recommended that you do not perform any strenuous activities or prolonged (longer than around 1 hour) weight-bearing activities such as jogging for 48 hours after receiving a Supartz injection.

If you miss an appointment to receive a Supartz injection, contact your healthcare provider to make plans to receive your next injection.

Supartz Dosage

The recommended dose of Supartz to be given is one injection one time a week (7 days apart) for a total of 5 injections. In studies, some patients had relief of their osteoarthritis symptoms after only 3 injections. Your doctor will determine how many injection of Supartz you need based on how you respond to this medication.

Supartz Overdose

If Supartz is administered by a healthcare provider in a medical setting, it is unlikely that an overdose will occur. However, if overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention.
