Tobrex Overview

Tobrex is a prescription medication used to treat bacterial infections in the eye.

Tobrex belongs to a group of drugs called aminoglycoside antibiotics. These work by killing the bacteria that cause infections.

This medication comes in solution form for eye drops and as an eye ointment. The drops are usually instilled every 4 to 8 hours and the ointment is applied 2 to 4 times a day.

Common side effects of Tobrex include tearing, swelling of the eye, and itching, stinging, or burning of the eye.

Tobrex can also cause blurred vision. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Tobrex affects you.

Tobrex Precautions

Serious side effects have been reported with Tobrex including the following:

Hypersensitivity reactions and ocular toxicity. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have some or all of the following symptoms of a hypersensitivity reaction or ocular toxicity.

  • Swelling of the eyelid
  • Redness of the eye

Total blood levels of antibiotics should be measured when Tobrex is administered with other aminoglycoside antibiotics.

Tobrex can cause blurred vision. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Tobrex affects you.

Do not take Tobrex if you are allergic to Tobrex or to any of its ingredients.

Tobrex Food Interactions

Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Tobrex, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving this medication.

Before taking Tobrex, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Especially tell your doctor if you:

  • are allergic to Tobrex or to any of its ingredients
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • wear contact lenses

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Tobrex and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

The FDA categorizes medications based on safety for use during pregnancy. Five categories - A, B, C, D, and X - are used to classify the possible risks to an unborn baby when a medication is taken during pregnancy.

Tobrex falls into category B. There are no well-done studies that have been done in humans with Tobrex. In animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication, and the babies did not show any medical issues related to this medication.

Tobrex and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

It is not known if Tobrex crosses into human milk. Because of the possibility for adverse reactions in nursing infants from Tobrex, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or to stop use of this medication. The importance of the drug to the mother should be considered.

Tobrex Usage

Take Tobrex exactly as prescribed.

Tobrex comes in solution form for eye drops and as an eye ointment. The drops are usually instilled every 4 to 8 hours and the ointment is applied 2 to 4 times a day.

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take 2 doses of Tobrex at the same time.

Tobrex Dosage

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.

The dose your doctor recommends may be based on the condition being treated.

The recommended dose of Tobrex eye drops is 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 hours.

The recommended dose of Tobrex eye ointment is ½-inch of ointment applied to the affected eye(s) 2 to 4 times per day.

Tobrex Overdose

If you take too much Tobrex, call your healthcare provider or local Poison Control Center, or seek emergency medical attention right away.

If Tobrex is administered by a healthcare provider in a medical setting, it is unlikely that an overdose will occur. However, if overdose is suspected, seek emergency medical attention.

Other Requirements

  • Store Tobrex at room temperature.
  • Keep this and all medicines out of the reach of children.
