Toprol Overview

Updated:

Toprol is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), and congestive heart failure. Toprol belongs to a group of drugs called beta blockers, which work by relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate. This improves blood flow and decreases overall blood pressure.

This medication comes as an extended-release tablet and is taken once a day. Do not chew, divide, or break Toprol tablets. Swallow tablets whole.

Common side effects include fatigue, tiredness, and shortness of breath. Toprol can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Toprol affects you.

    Toprol and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

The FDA categorizes medications based on safety for use during pregnancy. Five categories - A, B, C, D, and X, are used to classify the possible risks to an unborn baby when a medication is taken during pregnancy.

Toprol falls into category C. In animal studies, pregnant animals were given this medication and had some babies born with problems. No well-controlled studies have been done in humans, though. Therefore, this medication may be used if the potential benefits to the mother outweigh the potential risks to the unborn child.

    Toprol and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

Toprol has been detected in human breast milk. Because of the possibility for adverse reactions in nursing infants from Toprol, a choice should be made whether to stop nursing or to stop use of this medication. The importance of the drug to the mother should be considered.

    Toprol FDA Warning

Following abrupt cessation of therapy with certain beta-blocking agents, exacerbations of angina pectoris and, in some cases, myocardial infarction have occurred. When discontinuing chronically administered metoprolol, particularly in patients with ischemic heart disease, the dosage should be gradually reduced over a period of 1 - 2 weeks and the patient should be carefully monitored. If angina markedly worsens or acute coronary insufficiency develops, Toprol administration should be reinstated promptly, at least temporarily, and other measures appropriate for the management of unstable angina should be taken. Warn patients against interruption or discontinuation of therapy without the physician’s advice. Because coronary artery disease is common and may be unrecognized, it may be prudent not to discontinue Toprol therapy abruptly even in patients treated only for hypertension
