Tymlos is a prescription medication used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Tymlos is a manufactured version of the body's natural parathyroid hormone. It works in bones to help build new bone and make bones stronger. 

Tymlos is an injection given just below the skin on your stomach. Tymlos is used at the same time once every day.

Common side effects of Tymlos include dizziness, nausea, and headache.

Uses of Tymlos

 Tymlos is a prescription medicine used to: 

  • decrease the chance of having a fracture of the spine and other bones in postmenopausal women with thinning and weakening bones (osteoporosis).
  • treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who are at high risk for bone fracture.

It is not known if Tymlos is safe and effective for children 18 years and younger. 

It is not recommended that people use Tymlos for more than 2 years during their lifetime. 

Tymlos should not be used in children and young adults whose bones are still growing.

This medication may be prescribed for other uses. Ask our doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Side Effects of Tymlos

Serious side effects have been reported with Tymlos. See the "Tymlos Precautions" section. 

Common side effects of Tymlos include the following:

  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • headache
  • fast heartbeat 
  • feeling very tired (fatigue) 
  • upper stomach pain 
  • vertigo

Tymlos Interactions

No drug interactions have been reported by the manufacturer. However, you should tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Not all drug interactions are known or reported and new drug interactions are continually being reported.

Tymlos Precautions

Serious side effects have been reported with Tymlos including:

Risk of Bone Cancer. Tymlos may cause bone cancer and is not recommended for use in specific patients. (See box warning for more details)

Low blood pressure that happens when you stand up from sitting or lying down. Tymlos can cause you to feel dizzy when you stand directly from sitting or lying down. Symptoms of orthostatic hypotension include 

  • dizziness
  • palpitations (feeling like your heart is racing)
  • increased heart rate
  • nausea

Increased calcium levels. If you already have increased calcium levels due to another condition, do not use Tymlos.

Increased calcium in the urine and kidney stones. 

Do not take Tymlos if you are allergic to Tymlos or to any of this medication’s ingredients.

Tymlos Food Interactions

Medications can interact with certain foods. In some cases, this may be harmful and your doctor may advise you to avoid certain foods. In the case of Tymlos, there are no specific foods that you must exclude from your diet when receiving this medication.

Inform MD

Before taking Tymlos, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions. Especially tell your doctor if you:

  • are allergic to Tymlos or to any of its ingredients
  • have or have had any condition that is marked by increased calcium in your blood
  • have or have had kidney stones

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Tymlos and Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. 

Tymlos is not indicated for use in women with reproductive potential. 

Tymlos and Lactation

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. 

Tymlos is not indicated for use in women with breastfeeding potential.

Tymlos Usage

Take Tymlos exactly as prescribed. 

Tymlos is an injection given just below the skin on your stomach. Tymlos is used at the same time once every day. Rotate where you inject on your stomach. Your doctor may tell you to take Tymlos with calcium and vitamin D if you do not get enough in your diet. 

Tymlos should not be used for more than 2 total years of your lifetime. 

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it that day. However, if the day has already passed, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Never inject more than one dose per day.

Tymlos Dosage

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. 

The recommended dose of Tymlos for the treatment of osteoporosis is 80 mcg injected just below the skin 1 time a day. 

Tymlos Overdose

If you take too much Tymlos, call your healthcare provider or local Poison Control Center, or seek emergency medical attention right away.

Other Requirements

Tymlos should be stored in the refrigerator until use. After used for the first time, Tymlos should be stored at room temperature for up to 30 days. Do not freeze Tymlos.

Keep Tymlos and all medications out of the reach of children.  

Tymlos FDA Warning

Tymlos caused a dose dependent increased risk for bone cancer in rats. The effect was observed at doses 4-28 times higher than the human dose. It is unknown if Tymlos will cause bone cancer in humans.

Tymlos is not recommended in specific patients including those with Paget's disease of bone or unexplained elevations of alkaline phosphatase, open epiphyses, bone metastases or skeletal malignancies, hereditary disorders predisposing to osteosarcoma, or prior external beam or implant radiation therapy involving the skeleton.

It is not recommended to use Tymlos for more than 2 years total in a patient's lifetime.
